    The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of Extremely Low Frequency electromagnetic Fields (ELF) on the differentiation of cerebellar granule neurons. These cells represent the main population of the rat cerebellum and is one of the most widespread models for the study of numerous neuronal parameters(Balazs et al.,1988; Gallo et al.,1987; Contestabile 2002). In this research I studied cerebellar granule neurons, in experiments in vitro and in vivo. In the first case I analyzed the effects induced by the exposure to electromagnetic fields on primary cerebellar granule neurons of newborn rats, which were eight days old. In the second case I exposed pregnant rats, for the entire duration of the gestation and I sacrified the newborn rat after eight days of exposure. In both cases the cells exposed to the electromagnet fields of 50 Hz, 1 mT showed one premature reaction to Glutamate toxicity test. Moreover the Patch clamp technique showed an increase of the currents of the KAINATO in the exposed cells. These two techniques showed a premature and greater activity of glutamate receptors in the exposed cells. The study of expression of ionotropic glutamate receptors confirmed, by means of Western blotting and RT-PCR, their precocius expression in the exposed cells. These receptors represent an index of maturation of the cerebellar granule neurons (Hack and Balazs 1994), therefore I studied another important neuronal marker, the protein NF-200, one of the three proteins of the neurofilament. Immunofluorescence assay and Western blotting showed one greater expression of this marker in the exposed cells compared to control cells. All these results indicate that the electromagnetic fields of 50Hz and 1 mT can interact with biological material, in fact in my research I demonstrated that the exposure to this physical agent is able to induce a premature maturation and differentiation of cerebellar granule neurons

    Strategic environmental assessment implementation of transport and mobility plans. The case of italian regions and provinces

    Transport and mobility plans imply strategies and actions that affect the environment. The European Union has introduced in 2001 the strategic environmental assessment (SEA) to take into account and mitigate adverse environmental effects in planning and decision-making. SEA limited implementation has attracted the interest of many scholars that have sought methods able to assess the quality of SEA processes by identifying vices and virtues in practice. In this paper, we measure the quality of eight SEAs for transport and mobility plans of regional and provincial administrations of Italy. Results show that the overall quality level of SEA reports is only barely sufficient, Abruzzo is among the virtuous and Piedmont among the critical administrations. We also stress that the determination of impact significance has received the worse quality score. We finally compare our results to other Italian and British homologous cases finding interesting and generally confirmative evidence

    Interstitial lung abnormalities: new insights between theory and clinical practice

    : Interstitial lung abnormalities (ILAs) represent radiologic abnormalities incidentally detected on chest computed tomography (CT) examination, potentially related to interstitial lung diseases (ILD). Numerous studies have demonstrated that ILAs are associated with increased risk of progression toward pulmonary fibrosis and mortality. Some radiological patterns have been proven to be at a higher risk of progression. In this setting, the role of radiologists in reporting these interstitial abnormalities is critical. This review aims to discuss the most recent advancements in understanding this radiological entity and the open issues that still prevent the translation from theory to practice, emphasizing the importance of ILA recognition and adequately reporting in clinical practice

    Sea guidelines: a comparative analysis: first outcomes

    The European Directive 2001/42/EC (Directive) has introduced the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), a procedure for assessing the effects of certain plans and programs on the environment. The Directive has been transposed in different ways and times within Europe: member states have frequently drawn up guidelines to facilitate SEA implementation, by adopting different approaches. So far a few studies have been performed to analyze SEA guidelines. In this paper we aim to analyze key elements of SEA guidelines released by seven European countries in order to evaluate the effectiveness of those documents and SEA implementation. We have found that no SEA guidelines satisfy all key elements we have identified. Based on the latter finding, this work is introductory to a further analysis which aims to characterize SEA guidelines and define a proposal of SEA guidelines for landscape planning in the Italian region of Sardinia.</br

    Management of High-Pressure Injection Hand Injuries: A Multicentric, Retrospective, Observational Study

    Hand injuries after high-pressure injection are a medical emergency. These events occur frequently in workers during industrial cleaning, painting, and lubrication, and may have devastating consequences, leading to eventual amputation and poor functional outcomes. The authors have investigated the evolution, management, and outcome. Medical records of occupational medicine units and hand surgery units were collected in order to spot the high-pressure gear accident cases. Records were analyzed by dividing the subjects into two groups: those treated within 6 h and after 6 h of the trauma. A follow-up was carried out at least 1 year after treatment; the post-treatment outcomes were assessed. Of the 71 (100%) subjects, 26 (37%) were treated ≤6 h and 45 (63%) >6 h. A total of 28% (n = 20) underwent amputation. In 61% of cases, accidents had occurred in the iron and steel sector. High viscosity materials with a delayed treatment beyond 6 h seemed to determine compartmental syndrome and following amputation. A significantly better outcome was reported among subjects treated ≤6 h compared to those treated >6 h, 20% (n = 7) versus 26% (n = 9), respectively. Early management of this type of injury is crucial. The results of this study may contribute to providing guidelines to occupational physicians in order to best manage this type of emergency

To investigate the heterogeneity of sponge extracellular sulphated glycans, we determined their content and distribution in some Mediterranean and Caribbean species. To focus on biological and morpho-functional roles of these molecules in the sponge ECM some selected species were considered as models to investigate the topographic distribution of GAGs in sponge body according with the different architecture of specialized regions

    SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, Parkinson's disease, and other movement disorders: case series and short literature review

    BACKGROUND: Several neurological complications have been reported following SARS-Cov-2 vaccination, without a clear causal relationship ever being verified, including some cases of worsening of Parkinson’s disease (PD) symptoms and new onset of movement disorders in non-parkinsonian patients. METHODS: We describe two new cases of PD patients treated with device-aided therapy who developed worsening of parkinsonian symptoms after receiving the third vaccine dose (booster). We also conducted a short review of the cases reported in literature of PD symptoms worsening and new onset of movement disorders in non-parkinsonian patients after SARS-Cov-2 vaccination. RESULTS: The first patient, a 46-year-old man implanted with bilateral Subthalamic Deep Brain Stimulation, experienced temporary motor and non-motor symptoms worsening after mRNA-1273 booster, improved after stimulation settings modification. The second patient, a 55-year-old man implanted with percutaneous endoscopic transgastric jejunostomy (PEG-J) for levodopa-carbidopa intestinal gel (LCIG) infusion experienced severe temporary worsening of dyskinesia and managed through temporary LCIG dose reduction. Other seven cases of vaccine-related movement disorder are currently reported in literature, four describing PD symptoms worsening and three the onset of new movement disorders in otherwise healthy people. CONCLUSION: Both our patients and the cases described so far completely recovered after few days with parkinsonian therapy modification, symptomatic treatment, or even spontaneously, underlining the transient and benign nature of side effects from vaccine. Patients should be reassured about these complications, manageable through a prompt evaluation by the reference neurologist.     The diagnostic value of grey-scale inversion technique in chest radiography

    Purpose: We investigated whether the additional use of grey-scale inversion technique improves the interpretation of eight chest abnormalities, in terms of diagnostic performance and interobserver variability. Material and methods: A total of 507 patients who underwent a chest computed tomography (CT) examination and a chest radiography (CXR) within 24&nbsp;h were enrolled. CT was the standard of reference. Images were retrospectively reviewed for the presence of atelectasis, consolidation, interstitial abnormality, nodule, mass, pleural effusion, pneumothorax and rib fractures. Four CXR reading settings, involving 3 readers were organized: only standard; only inverted; standard followed by inverted; and inverted followed by standard. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV) and accuracy, assessed with the area under the curve (AUC), and their 95% confidence interval were calculated for each reader and setting. Interobserver agreement was tested by Cohen's K test with quadratic weights (Kw) and its 95%CI. Results: CXR sensitivity % for any finding was 35.1 (95% CI: 33 to 37) for setting 1, 35.9 (95% CI: 33 to 37), for setting 2, 32.59 (95% CI: 30 to 34) for setting 3, and 35.56 (95% CI: 33 to 37) for setting 4; specificity % 93.78 (95% CI: 91 to 95), 93.92 (95% CI: 91 to 95), 94.43 (95% CI: 92 to 96), 93.86 (95% CI: 91 to 95); PPV % 56.22 (95% CI: 54.2 to 58.2), 56.49 (95% CI: 54.5 to 58.5), 57.15 (95% CI: 55 to 59), 56.75 (95% CI: 54 to 58); NPV % 85.66 (95% CI: 83 to 87), 85.74 (95% CI: 83 to 87), 85.29 (95% CI: 83 to 87), 85.73 (95% CI: 83 to 87); AUC values 0.64 (95% CI: 0.62 to 0.66), 0.65 (95% CI: 0.63 to 0.67), 0.64 (95% CI: 0.62 to 0.66), 0.65 (95% CI: 0.63 to 0.67); Kw values 0.42 (95% CI: 0.4 to 0.44), 0.40 (95% CI: 0.38 to 0.42), 0.42 (95% CI: 0.4 to 0.44), 0.41 (95% CI: 0.39 to 0.43) for settings 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively. Conclusions: No significant advantages were observed in the use of grey-scale inversion technique neither over standard display mode nor in combination at the detection of eight chest abnormalities

    A Reaction-Diffusion Numerical Model to Predict Cardiac Tissues Regeneration Via Stem Cell Therapy

    Myocardial infarction is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the industrialized world. Extensive loss of cardiomyocytes, substituted by scarred tissue, is the key pathological mechanism leading to post infarc- tion heart failure [1]. The use of exogenous cells to replace lost cardiomy- ocytes has been demonstrated in animal models and in clinical trials by transplanting mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into the infarcted area. To optimize the initial conditions of the stem cell therapy, many experimen- tal studies are focused on determining the number and the localization of stem cells that must be implanted near the necrotic area. In this work we develop a quantitative numerical model able to simulate substrate con- centration profile, stem cells distribution and their proliferation near the ischemic area. The model describes the cell growth, the nutrient transport and its consumption through reaction-diffusion equations. The shrinking of the necrotic area leads in fact to a moving boundary problem. Some preliminary results, obtained in a 3D framework, are shown and discuss
